Core Technology: Smart Technology

We have developed a unique and high-efficiency antimicrobial technology, namely SMART Technology, to fight against a very broad spectrum of harmful microbes such as bacteria, spores and fungi. SMART Technology makes use of a polypeptide (P)-conjugated photosensitizer (PS), collectively denoted as PS-P, to realize the antimicrobial property. SMART Technology functions via a dual antimicrobial mechanism where PS is based on photodynamic antimicrobial (PDA) mechanism and P works via cationic antimicrobial (CA) mechanism.

PDA mechanism is based on the science of photochemistry. In the photochemical process, the PS is activated by light irradiation and undergoes transition from ground singlet state to a short-lived excited singlet state. This short-lived excited singlet state is quickly converted to the long-lived excited triplet state via intersystem crossing. The PS in excited triplet state will interact with the ambient oxygen molecules through two types of reaction passways: in type 1, the oxygen molecules are converted to reactive oxygen species (ROS) which include superoxide anion radicals, hydrogen peroxide and hydroxyl radicals; in type 2 which is the major reaction passway, the oxygen molecules are excited from the ground triplet state to the excited singlet state. The products generated from both passways are highly oxidizing agents which can kill the microorganisms in the vicinity. Meantime, the PS molecules are relaxed from the excited triplet state back to the ground singlet state, being regenerated for next cycles of PDA process.

In the CA mechanism, the cationic (positively charged) polypeptide can particularly attack the negatively charged microbes. The cell membranes of the microbes will be destroyed and thus the microbes will be killed. By combination of PDA and CA mechanisms, SMART Technology works to kill the microorganisms with high efficiency both with and without light.
